“Lost Ghosts”

“Lost Ghosts” was an installation project at UTS where the goal was to breathe a sense of magic back into the mundane. Our group’s concept was reanimating animals that we had lost due to human activity. Two of the animals reimagined are the Paradise Parrot and the Lord Howe Boobook. As the title implies, the birds are depicted as spectral forms, going about how they would’ve behaved within their natural habitat.

The two films were developed to be projected animations within a dark room, emphasizing the ghost like creatures.

“Paradise Parrot”

The Paradise Parrot, was last seen around 1927 and was theorized to have been driven to extinction due to over grazing and annual burning of native grass. It was described to have a plumage of a wide range of colours, tail as long as its body and spent most of its time on the ground in small groups.

“Southern Boobook”

Endemic to the Lord Howe Island within the Tasman Sea, it was described to be smaller than most mainland Boobook species of owls. Their calls were last heard around the 1950s.
